Square Alphabet Number Four

A fourth experimental alphabet based on squares nested in a five-by-five matrix. Rather than deleting squares from the matrix to generate the letterforms, this alphabet relies on the contrast between two tones. Again legibility has been compromised on certain letters but this may be an unavoidable consequence of retaining an essentially square alphabet. While the two-tone approach allows a better weighting on the E and F, this matrix lacks sufficient resolution to allow for a more balanced weighting throughout the alphabet.

Square Alphabet Number Three

Another experimental square alphabet this time based on three squares that are proportionately three-thirds, two-thirds and one-third in area. Square Alphabet Number Three continues along the lines of Square Alphabet Number One in that a very rigid framework underlies the creation of the letterforms. However, a relaxation of the rules, and a refinement of some characters could well result in a font that is both visually striking and legible.

Square Alphabet Number Two

Another experimental alphabet in response to Raffael Stueken's original. This time based on a nine-by-nine matrix of squares. I tried a ten-by-ten matrix initially but found that the even number would not sufficiently allow the suggestion of angles or curves which I felt was a failing of Square Alphabet Number One. Given that I'd started with the purpose of creating an alphabet defined by its very square-ness, a form not noted for either curves or angles, the matrix seemed an obvious way out. However, I'm not all that certain that resultant alphabet is in fact square enough.

Square Alphabet Number One

This is an experimental alphabet based on a series of proportionate squares (one-hundred, seventy-five, fifty and twenty-five percent) inspired in part by an alphabet in Raffael Stueken's Norm, a Diploma project I came across on Issuu. Check it, and the rest of his work out there.

Vignette - I don't wanna be me…

i don't wanna be me she said, unconvinced. or unconvincingly. i couldn't tell. too little bread and too many wine. embarrassed now. spilling secrets with the wine. time to stop but still it comes. friends in drips of bottles scraping the last drop. my glass epic and unending. a cunning plan bar stupor.

she reaches. less with body than with will. pulling me into her. emptying all the misery of weeks gone by into a reckless lunge. connecting full force with my own desperation. a dented libido. her need, the same need, now burning within me. we graze each other passing. rueful at the outset but realisation dawning, drowning my mind. here, now, tonight at least, this someone wants me. this someone real. drunk and messy. this someone…

sometime later, she's creeping out. denial seeping out of her. she wants her liberation but's too reticent to ask. burdened with the shame of wanting and the guilt of getting.
